The Excuse Does Not Announce Itself

No founder sits down and writes "excuse" in their business plan. It does not arrive labeled. It arrives dressed as caution, as wisdom, as due diligence. It sits inside your calendar, your to-do list, your perfectly formatted spreadsheet that has never been acted on.

The excuse says: not yet. And not yet sounds responsible.

This is the mechanism. Excuses in small business do not feel like weakness. They feel like patience. They feel like strategy. They feel, most dangerously, like virtue.

The Four Disguises Excuses Wear in 2026

1. The Credential Costume

"I need to learn more before I launch."

The founder who waits for a computer science degree before building a product, the one who needs one more course before they coach their first client, the one who will start the business after the certification arrives in the mail: this is the credential costume.

Knowledge is not the gate. Execution is the gate. You learn the rest inside the work, not before it.

I did not have a perfect credential when I arrived in Georgetown, Ontario, on 12 October 2023. I had a body of work, a clear problem I could solve, and the discipline to begin. BizTomate Inc did not wait for a Canadian business degree. It waited for nothing. It started.

2. The Stack Fantasy

"I just need the right tools in place."

The stack fantasy is seductive because technology is real and tool choices do matter. But the founder who redesigns their tech setup every six weeks is not building. They are decorating.

The Creator exists because founders needed a content system that ran without a production team, not because the moment was perfect. Biztomate, our AI business card scanner, was built because the problem was real, not because the environment was ideal. Tools serve execution. They do not replace it.

If you are on your third CRM migration in a year and your follow-up process still does not work, the problem is not the CRM.

3. The Market Weather Report

"The market is too uncertain right now."

The market is always uncertain. This is not a 2026 condition. This is a permanent condition of operating a business. Founders who wait for certainty are waiting for something that has never existed and will not.

There is a difference between reading the market and hiding inside the reading. One produces decisions. The other produces newsletters.

I have worked in environments far less forgiving than a softening Canadian economy. I have watched people build in conditions that would make most founders here stop scrolling and be grateful. Uncertainty is the operating environment. Build inside it.

4. The Capital Delay

"I will start properly once I have more money."

Sometimes capital is genuinely the constraint. More often, the absence of capital is the excuse that protects the founder from the risk of finding out whether the idea works.

A lean start is not a handicap. It is a forcing function. It makes you choose what actually matters. It prevents you from spending your way into the illusion of progress.

The businesses I see stall most consistently are not the underfunded ones. They are the ones that raise money and then lose urgency.

Where Excuses Actually Live

Excuses do not live in your mouth. They live in the gap between the decision you announced and the action that never followed.

You told your spouse you were starting the business. You told your network at the last event. You updated your LinkedIn headline. But six months later, the offer is still not written. The system is still not built. The first client has not been called.

That gap is where the excuse lives. It is not loud. It is just there, quietly compounding.

If you want to locate your excuses, do not audit your goals. Audit the gap between what you said you would do and what you did. Be ruthless about the distance. The distance is the data.

The Discipline Triangle

I return to this often: commitment, resilience, and discipline form the triangle that holds a business upright. Pull any corner loose and the structure softens.

Excuses are the mechanism by which you pull corners loose while telling yourself the structure is fine.

Commitment without follow-through is a declaration. Resilience without action is just surviving. Discipline is the corner that converts the other two into something that produces revenue, serves clients, and builds something worth leaving behind.

This is not motivational language. This is operational language. Discipline is the system you run when the feeling is absent. You build systems, not moods.

What a Coach Actually Does With Excuses

I do not coach comfort. I make excuses unemployed.

When you work with me, the first thing we do is not build a strategy. The first thing we do is audit the story you are telling yourself about why you are where you are. That story contains the excuses. Some of them are invisible to you because you have been living inside them.

The coaching is not therapy. It is not cheerleading. It is the practice of holding what you said against what you did, and then deciding, together, what you are actually going to do next.

That is it. Consult with me, not for me, but for you.

The Last Question

Before you close this and return to your inbox, answer one question honestly.

What is the one action you have been delaying for more than thirty days, and what is the real reason you have not done it?

Not the stated reason. The real one.

Write it down. Look at it. Decide whether that reason is a legitimate constraint or an excuse wearing a suit.

Then decide what you are going to do about it today, not next quarter, not after the market settles, not once the stack is perfect.

Today.

God gives you the day. What you do inside it is your answer to that gift.
